Gettysburg Adams Chamber Seeks Donations for Gettysburg’s Flower Planters
May 31 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Gettysburg Adams Chamber of Commerce, Adams County’s oldest and largest business organization, is seeking community support to continue the flower baskets and stationary planters that line the streets near Lincoln Square in Gettysburg each year. The chamber has created a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 for the purchase and maintenance of the flowers.
“The beautiful flower baskets enhance the aesthetics of downtown Gettysburg, but they have a greater purpose, too,” said Carrie Stuart, chamber president. “The flowers make downtown inviting for all who live, work and visit the area. Where other downtowns across the nation are struggling, we have worked hard as a community to make Gettysburg a great place to spend time and support local businesses.
“Please consider donating to the Flower Fund so we can continue to reap the many benefits the flowers bring to our quality of life.”
A true community effort, the plants are purchased at Musselman Greenhouses in Cashtown, assembled and maintained by the Gettysburg Garden Club and watered daily by the Elm Street program using water provided by the Gettysburg Borough.
While volunteers perform maintenance, like pinching back spent blossoms and checking the conditions of the baskets, a part-time paid employee is needed to ensure the baskets are properly cared for and watered, which takes an average of two hours each day. Previously the Elm Street community development program funded the employee, but funds are no longer available.
Local businesses and organizations have already pledged funds, seeing the importance of the project to encouraging customers to patronize downtown businesses, said Stuart. But more funds are needed to ensure the flower project can continue in future years.
