SUMMARY:Restoration of New Oxford town platt
DESCRIPTION:The community of New Oxford is rich with history and there are many things worth preserving. The original layout plan of the town\, then known as "Oxford-Town\," dates to 1792\, and is one of these things. It was hand-drawn by surveyor James Bolton on parchment. The plan\, belonging to the United Hook & Ladder #33 Fire Co.\, had been framed between two pieces of glass and was hanging on the wall in the fire hall for some time. It had been fading from prolonged light exposure\, so it was put into storage. Over the years\, trapped moisture caused the parchment to expand and contract\, causing severe wrinkling\, mold\, staining\, and even tearing.    The New Oxford Area Historical Society (NOAHS) recognized that this important part of New Oxford's history was in danger of disappearing forever. They discussed this matter with the UH&L #33 and offered to fund the entire restoration project from start to finish. The offer was accepted and a professional art conservator in Ortanna\, Maria Pukownik\, was chosen to restore this one-of-a-kind plat. After a few months\, the restoration was completed and the plat was taken to Forget-Me-Not Framing. Acid-free museum grade materials were used to frame the plat\, including a UV-filtering glass to offer as much protection against fading as possible. The entire cost of this restoration and preservation project was just under $6000. NOAHS is also having a case built to house the framed plat on the wall in the fire hall.    So now\, it is ready to return to the UH&L #33 to be hung on the wall again for the members of the community to enjoy and cherish. The framed "Plan of Oxford-Town" will be presented back to the UH&L #33 by the NOAHS at their general membership meeting on Sunday\, May 19 in the Gallery Room on the 2nd floor of the Main Building at Cross Keys Village. The meeting is from 2-4pm and their guest speaker will be Dr. Walter Powell who will give a presentation entitled "The Hersh Family in the Civil War\," a prominent and important family in New Oxford during the 19th & 20th centuries. This free program is open to the public.

The Weikerts purchased the property in 1840\, and the house\, barn\, and carriage house were used to care for more than 700 wounded soldiers during and following the Battle of Gettysburg.    Owners Gerry and Elizabeth Hoffman will lead guests on a 60- to 90-minute tour of the house and barn while sharing the details they have collected about their home’s storied past. Much is known thanks in part to the writing of Matilda “Tillie” Pierce Alleman\, who documented her experiences at the farm in At Gettysburg\, or\, What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle. The film encourages young men to fight back against these pressures. Filmmaker Dr. Thomas Keith is a professor of philosophy at California State University. These are the hours of The 18th Annual Hanover Chili Cook Off. Chili City\, PA will be the official home of the International Chili Society (ICS) PA State Championship Cook Off and the Pennsylvania Keystone Cup Open Chili Championship. As in past years\, the Hanover Chili Cook Off promises to be the most significant fund raising event for nonprofit organizations in the Hanover community. With the influx of Cooks and chili fans\, Chili City\, PA will rank 85th in Pennsylvania municipal population\, with the heaviest Chili Cook density in America.  Expect over 10\,000 citizens to inhabit Chili City\, PA\, sampling chili of all varieties from an expected 50 Chili Cooks and lots of family fun. Traditional Red Chili\, Chili Verde and Salsa competitions will be judged by ICS (www.chilicookoff.com) standards to crown the Pennsylvania State ICS Champions. These winners earn an entry into the ICS World Championship Chili Cook Off to be held in Palm Springs\, CA. Pennsylvania residents will cook to win the Keystone Cup Open Chili competition.  Watson the Magician\, Randini the Remarkable Juggler\, face painting and balloon art by Changing Faces 4 Fun will be in the field performing for young and old.
